When RJ Scaringe took the stage to reveal the mainstream Rivian R2 SUV, automotive industry watchers expected a sensible, family-oriented midsize electric crossover designed to compete with the Tesla Model Y. But as the presentation concluded, Scaringe uttered the famous Steve Jobs phrase: 'One more thing.'
Rolling out onto the stage was the Rivian R3 and its high-performance sibling, the R3X. Instantly, automotive internet communities erupted with sheer enthusiasm. With its short overhangs, angular C-pillar, and lifted rally stance, the R3X managed to do what few modern EVs have achieved: trigger visceral, nostalgic passion across gearheads and mainstream buyers alike.

The Design Philosophy: Group B Heritage Meets Outdoor Adventure#
Look closely at the silhouette of the Rivian R3X, and you can see affectionate homages to legendary 1980s rally icons: the Lancia Delta Integrale, the Audi Sport Quattro, and the Volkswagen Golf Country. Yet it remains unmistakably a Rivian, wearing the brand's signature vertical stadium headlights and continuous horizontal light bar.
Key exterior and packaging highlights include:
Lifted Ground Clearance: Wider track and generous suspension travel tuned for spirited driving on dirt, snow, and rough forest trails.
Ruggedized Aero Accents: Chunky wheel-arch cladding, aggressive front skid plate with integrated orange tow hooks, and multi-spoke wheels wrapped in all-terrain rubber.
The Flipper Glass: In a brilliant stroke of utilitarian design, the rear hatch window opens independently from the main tailgate. You can drop long cargo (surfboards, lumber, camping poles) out the back without keeping the entire liftgate open.
“"The R3X is a love letter to the hot-hatch era. It takes the spirited, chuckable dimensions of vintage rally cars and supercharges them with silent, instant electric torque."”
The R3X isn't an appearance package; it features Rivian's most potent midsize powertrain configuration:
Tri-Motor All-Wheel Drive: Single motor on the front axle and two independent motors on the rear axle delivering authentic torque vectoring across the rear wheels.
Estimated Output: ~850 horsepower and 1,150 Nm of torque.
0–60 mph Acceleration: Under 3.0 seconds, making it quicker than almost every gas-powered hot hatch in history.
Range: Over 300 miles (483 km) on the larger structural battery pack.
Charging Standard: Native NACS (North American Charging Standard) charge port supporting Tesla Superchargers and high-speed CCS networks without adapters.
Inside the Cabin: Durable Cork and Rugged Textiles#
Step inside the R3X, and Rivian's outdoor design DNA is evident in every touchpoint. Designers incorporated sustainable ribbed cork accents on the door panels and steering wheel, combined with rugged, weather-resistant upholstery that can be wiped clean after a muddy trail hike.
Both front and rear seats fold completely flat into the floor, allowing two adults to camp comfortably inside the climate-controlled cabin with an uninterrupted view through the full-length glass panoramic roof.
Targeting an estimated starting price of $48,000 (€45,000), the Rivian R3X proves that electric cars do not need to look like generic, wind-tunnel jellybeans. By infusing character, rally heritage, and clever outdoor utility into a compact footprint, Rivian has created an instant cult classic.
