When Polestar branched off from Volvo to become a standalone performance electric marque, its initial vehicles—the Polestar 1 coupe and Polestar 2 fastback—relied on modified combustion architectures shared with parent company Geely. But the Polestar 5 marks the brand's complete emancipation.
Engineered at the Polestar UK R&D center in Coventry by a team of veteran motorsport and aerospace engineers, the Polestar 5 is built on the bespoke Polestar Performance Architecture (PPA)—an ultra-lightweight, high-rigidity bonded-aluminum monocoque platform designed to challenge the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT and Audi RS e-tron GT directly.

Aerospace Bonded Aluminum: Superior Torsional Rigidity#
Traditional steel unibodies are welded and stamped, adding substantial weight while flexing under sustained circuit cornering loads. The Polestar 5 utilizes aerospace bonding adhesives and hot-cured structural aluminum extrusions:
Torsional Stiffness: Surpasses two-seat supercars with a structural rigidity rating of 50 kNm/deg.
Weight Savings: The bare chassis monocoque weighs significantly less than smaller segment-D vehicle bodies.
Zero Rear Window Design: Following the aerodynamic philosophy debuted on the Polestar 4, the rear glass is completely eliminated. A high-definition roof-mounted digital camera feeds an ultra-wide digital rearview mirror, allowing structural roof crossmembers to stretch backward for unprecedented rear headroom and downforce optimization.
“"By bonding aluminum instead of spot-welding steel, we achieve a level of chassis purity and steering communication that you normally only experience in low-volume British track cars."”
Out on the winding asphalt of the Cotswolds, the Polestar 5 demonstrates extraordinary chassis composure. Rather than air springs that can feel floating and detached, the Polestar 5 uses semi-active MagneRide dampers paired with Polestar's signature Swedish gold multi-piston Brembo braking system.
Turn-in is razor sharp, with the electric power steering offering genuine road-texture feedback rarely found in modern electric sedans. The low center of gravity and rigid aluminum backbone keep body roll virtually imperceptible through rapid left-right transitions.
At an expected base price of $130,000 (€125,000), the Polestar 5 firmly establishes Polestar as a bona fide competitor to Stuttgart and Affalterbach. It combines Scandinavian design elegance, motorsport-grade structural engineering, and blistering electric performance into one of the most compelling GT cars of the decade.
