1986 BMW M3 E30: The Most Successful Touring Car Ever

Unlike modern M cars that are modified versions of executive sedans, the original E30 M3 was conceived purely as a Group A homologation racing special. BMW Motorsport modified virtually every body panel on the car, adding boxed blister fenders, a revised rear window angle, and a raised trunk lid with a functional rear wing to improve high-speed aerodynamics.

Under the hood, legendary engine guru Paul Rosche created the S14 2.3-liter four-cylinder, combining the cast-iron M10 block with a modified four-valve cylinder head from the BMW M1 supercar.

Homologation Glory#

Revving eagerly to 7,250 rpm and connected to a Getrag dog-leg 5-speed manual gearbox, the E30 M3 claimed the World Touring Car Championship, two European Touring Car Championships, and multiple DTM titles, making it the most victorious touring car in motorsport history.
