1954 Mercedes 300 SL: The World's First True Supercar

When American importer Max Hoffman convinced Mercedes-Benz to build a street-legal version of their W194 Le Mans race car, few anticipated it would birth the modern supercar genre. The 300 SL Gullwing introduced groundbreaking aerospace technology to post-war roads.

Because the lightweight tubular spaceframe chassis ran high along the sides of the car for structural rigidity, conventional side-hinged doors were impossible. Mercedes engineers solved the problem with upward-swinging 'Gullwing' doors that hinged on the roof.

Mechanical Firsts#

• Direct Fuel Injection: The world's first production car equipped with mechanical direct fuel injection (Bosch system adapted from Messerschmitt aircraft engines).
• Engine: 3.0-liter M198 canted inline-six producing 240 HP.
• Top Speed: Up to 260 km/h (161 mph), making it the fastest production car in the world in 1954.
• Steering Wheel: Tilting steering column to allow driver ingress over the wide door sills.
